Procedures
Diagnostic imaging is a branch of medicine that focuses on the
production of images to view the inside of the body for clues about
a medical condition. A variety of machines and techniques can create
pictures of the structures and activities inside the body. Many
imaging tests are painless and easy. Some involve radiation, but
these are generally considered safe because the dosage is very low.
Some do not use radiation but instead images are produced with high
frequency sound waves and magnetic fields.
X-rays,
CT scans,
nuclear medicine scans,
MRI scans, ultrasound, DXA and mammography are all types
of diagnostic imaging. The technology, or modality, used will depend
on a number of factors such as symptoms and the part of the body
being examined.
